Frequently asked questions about getting a licence in Munich

The questions we are asked most often — requirements, mandatory lessons and costs.

Car — class B, BF17 and B197

What does a car licence cost in Munich?

Expect roughly €3,000 to €4,500 in total. With us the base fee is €200, a driving lesson costs €95 and a special drive also €95. The final figure depends mostly on how many practice lessons you need, which differs from person to person. The price calculator lets you try out different numbers.

What are the requirements for class B?

Minimum age 18, an eye test, a first aid course, a biometric photo and the application at the citizens' office. File the application early — processing takes several weeks.

How many lessons are mandatory?

14 mandatory theory lessons (12 basic and 2 add-on) plus 12 special drives: 5 cross-country, 4 motorway and 3 night drives. On top come individual practice lessons depending on your skill. To get the licence you must pass a theory exam and a practical driving test.

What is BF17 and when can I start?

BF17 means accompanied driving from the age of 17. You can start the training at 16.5. You need parental consent, registered accompanying persons, an eye test, a first aid course and a passport photo. The scope of training is the same as for class B.

What does B197 mean — automatic or manual?

With code 197 you learn on an automatic car and additionally complete manual training of 10 lessons of 45 minutes. Afterwards you may drive both, with no automatic restriction entered in your licence.

Motorcycle — A1, A2, A, A80 and B196

At what age can I get A1, A2 or A?

A1 from 16, A2 from 18. The open class A is available from 24 through direct access, or from 20 if you have held A2 for at least 2 years.

What is code 80 (A80)?

You train and take the exam for class A but may only ride A2 machines until you turn 24. From 24 the full class A applies automatically, with no further exam.

How does the upgrade from A1 to A2 work?

If you have held A1 for at least 2 years you only need practice lessons and the practical test — no special drives and no theory exam. Without prior A1 it counts as a new licence: 12 special drives, practice lessons and both exams.

What does B196 cost for 125cc motorcycles?

€1,360 with us: €200 base fee, €60 theory lessons and 10 driving lessons at €110 each. Authority fees for the entry may be added.

What are the requirements for B196?

Minimum age 25, class B held for at least 5 years and residence in Germany. At least 4 × 90 minutes of theory and 5 × 90 minutes of practice are required. There is no exam — your instructor confirms participation. Note that the entitlement is valid only in Germany and is not a full A1 licence.

Do I need a theory exam for BE?

No. BE has no theory exam, only the practical test. You do need to hold class B already.

How many lessons do I need for BE?

Mandatory are 5 special drives: 3 cross-country, 1 motorway and 1 night drive, plus individual practice lessons.

What does switching driving schools cost?

€0. We handle the paperwork so your training continues without interruption — even mid-training.

What should I know about the intensive course?

Your documents must be approved before the course starts, so allow 4 to 6 weeks for processing. And you need a lot of availability, otherwise an intensive course makes little sense.

In which languages can I learn the theory?

Our online theory campus is available in 15 languages, around the clock. The chatbot on the home page answers in 16 languages, including Turkish, Arabic, Ukrainian, Greek, English and Urdu.

What is "Laienausbildung"?

You drive the exam routes privately — by bicycle or as a passenger. We provide the routes and explanations of the key waypoints. It makes you safer in traffic and saves practice lessons.
